how to use

The canvas is your creative space. The left rail holds every shape; the right rail holds every color. Pick one of each, then click anywhere on the white square to place it. Watch the live tile preview in the corner — it shows your pattern already repeating, updating as you draw.

the basics

1

Pick a shape from the left rail and a color from the right rail.

2

Move your mouse over the canvas to preview where it'll land — notice it wraps around the edges, so you can see exactly how it'll tile.

3

Click to place it. Use the size slider (or your keyboard's up/down arrows) to resize before placing, and the left/right arrow keys to rotate it 15° at a time.

4

The filled-square icon near the top of the shape rail is the background fill tool — pick a color and click anywhere on the canvas to set the whole tile's background. This never affects shapes already placed.

the buttons

clear

Wipes the canvas back to blank. There's no undo for this one — use it deliberately.

undo

Removes the last shape you placed. Works as many times as you need.

preview

Opens a much larger version of the live tile preview, for a real look at the repeating pattern.

download

Saves your seamless tile as a PNG, ready to use as an actual wallpaper or pattern fill.

Confused about why any of this matters? Head to inspiration to see what a seamless tile actually means.

why seamless tiling

inspiration

A seamless tile is a small square that repeats infinitely in every direction with no visible seam — the pattern at the right edge continues perfectly into the left edge of the next copy, and the same for top and bottom. It's the same trick behind wallpaper, fabric prints, and most background textures you've ever seen on a website.

pixelPlayground handles the wraparound math for you: place a shape near any edge, and it automatically mirrors a copy across to the opposite edge in the live preview, so you always know exactly what the repeating pattern will look like before you commit.

a few directions to try

diagonal rhythm

Repeat one shape at a steady diagonal offset for a woven, textile feel.

two-tone scatter

Two colors, one shape, placed loosely — reads as organic rather than gridded.

grid foundation

Start with the checkered or circle-grid pattern as scaffolding, then layer detail shapes on top.

single hero motif

One distinctive shape (the flower or trippy-effect pattern), repeated alone, often reads as more intentional than five shapes combined.
